this is currently what my kitchen floor looks like. yep. the girls and doug braved the blizzard conditions to play in the snow. for a whole 5 minutes. well, the girls anyway. doug was out for 1 1/2 shoveling the driveway because we currently have 16" of snow. and it's still falling. and blowing. and drifting. so, yep, you guessed it, you can't even tell he shoveled.
this is what it looked like this morning. that red and yellow toy car is now covered completely. i can't take a current picture because all i get is white. when the blowing settles i might snap another.
i started my morning at 630am, nice and quiet, followed by emma waking up shortly thereafter. nice relaxing morning. caught up on some blog reading and then decided to abandon the computer and start gathering stuff for my creative weekend project. i knew i wanted to do some sort of sewing project, but other than that i had no idea what. so i grabbed a pair of emma's outgrown cordouroy pants, and old denim dress and shirt, ashlyn's stack of felt and a paper and pencil to sketch. my purpose is just to do something creative, learn to make mistakes, not worry about perfection and use what i have laying around. my goal this year is to find ways to repurpose items that would otherwise have been thrown out.
after gathering stuff, the colors just felt like spring, so i decided to go the butterfly route. butterflies are a little symbolic for us.....i'll have to save it for another post though.
once i erased and re-sketched a bit and got the symmetry how i wanted, i cut out the pieces as my template and started pinning and tracing.
then i made my way up to the kitchen table and started sewing and clipping and pinning and sewing.....
and sewing some more. and can i just say, that i'm totally in LOVE with these stick pins from Fancy Pants. they are marketed to scrapbookers, but i loved using them in this project. just a little something that made me smile.
after embellishing each individual wing piece with decorative stitching, it was time to cut up the denim dress so i could pin down the pieces.
then i felt like the body of the butterfly was a little boring and needed a little somethin'. ribbon stash to the rescue!
and now i have an *almost* finished project. i had originally intended on making this a pillow, but now i'm debating on framing it or stretching it over canvas. i still need to add buttons to the end of the antennae, and maybe a little hand-stitching here and there. not so sure what step to take next.
but i do know one thing. it was FUN! and i haven't stressed once about the housework. i might even spend a few hours in the studio later. what did you do today?
