i think i need an intervention.

this is why my productivity is suffering...what a hot mess!

in case you were wondering.......i'm NOT a hoarder. even though this picture might say otherwise. LOL.

this, my friends, is the aftermath of an entire month of deadlines mixed with working longer hours at my other job during the last two weeks of tax season!

holy wow. i think i need an intervention.

or at least someone to help me come clean! LOL.  any takers? :)

i love children's authors.

last night i took spidergirl to our local library to meet illustrator and children's book author, Marc Brown.  he's the mastermind behind the cartoon character that children love and adore....Arthur. ya'll know who Arthur is, right?

my oldest daughter ashlyn went through a phase where she watched nothing but Arthur cartoons for about a whole year. kinda serendipitous that i'd look in the Weekender portion of our paper today and see that he would be at the local library giving a presentation and interacting with the kids. :) love when that happens.

he had the entire crowd, children and adults, roaring with laughter. he's super funny and quite the entertainer!  i'm not one to be star-struck, but being in a room surrounded by his fans, who he had cracking up laughing, felt kinda surreal. the grin plastered on my face was just as big as the one on the children's faces.

we were so thankful that they offered books for sale for him to sign too! i gladly got one for each of my daughters! i wish i would have thought to get one for spidergirl's teacher to add to her classroom library.

such a fun experience!  if you aren't already a part of your own local library system, i encourage you to take time to check out their upcoming events schedule. we've done some really cool things---all for free---at our local library. getting to meet Marc Brown ranks up there at the top of the list!

a gift idea featuring Little Yellow Bicycle's Swoon collection

a few of the Little Yellow Bicycle design team members have taken the Swoon collection and worked our magic on some gift ideas for a bride & groom.

staying true to my bright colorful style, i decided i wanted to put together a little album of sorts for the bride to be able to write love notes to her love, adding in bright pops of orange and lime green along the way.

(sidenote: if i could have my wedding all over again, i'd definitely go for the grey/orange/lime color combo. LOVE it! ya know, in case you were wondering, LOL.)

while the bride is welcome to use it how she sees fit, the album can be gifted with a note to the bride instructing her to take a few moments of quiet time each week, during her first year of marriage, to reflect on all the qualities she adores in her groom and then gift him with these notes of love on their first wedding anniversary.

it becomes somewhat of an open love letter to her groom. since the album, constructed from a few core pieces from chipboard album kit, is bound together with extra large book rings, this album can be something that can be added to for years and years to come.

the inside cardstock pages are simply cut to a measurement of 3 ¼” x 8” using a contrasting, yet coordinating, color of cardstock. i can’t even imagine what a treasure something like this would be for children and grandchildren to stumble upon in years to come. the thought of it excites me!

click on over the Little Yellow Bicycle blog to see some gorgeous ideas from two other design team members along with the supply lists for each of our projects! and don't forget you can see the entire Swoon collection here.

sometimes...

sometimes i stop and catch myself staring and thinking to myself....'gosh, she's beautiful!'

i know she knows i think so because i tell her every day. i just hope she never forgets. and i just hope she doesn't let the mean girls she'll encounter over the next few years tell her otherwise because she's just like me--constantly plagued with that little gremlin called 'self-doubt'.

but more than her outward beauty i hope i'm granted enough time to help her cultivate her inner beauty so her love and kindness radiates further out into the world around her.

in other news...i finally joined the rest of the world and made myself a twitter account! you can follow along with me @tania_willis leave me a comment with your twitter info so i can follow you too! :)

adventures in pinata making for Cinco de Mayo

the upcoming Cinco de Mayo holiday had me thinking that I needed to run to the store and purchase a party supplies to celebrate the occasion. when unable to find exactly the type I was looking for, I realized that this could be the perfect excuse to get a little messy with some basic crafting supplies to try a new project that’s been on my “techniques to try” project list for quite some time--a piñata--paper-mache style.
for the longest time, I had this idea in my head that making a decent looking piñata would be too overwhelming, too time-consuming, and just a waste of my time.
you see, I have this double-personality when it comes to making stuff. I’m very much a tackle something head-on and jump in with both feet first kind of girl (you know, the fly by the seat of my pants type) but, I’m also a little bit (okay, a lot bit) plagued by this thing called ‘fear of failure’. I was definitely gifted with an extreme type-A personality. so while this project has been on my list of things to do someday, it was one that didn’t get priority over something a little less intimidating.
that ‘ole upcoming holiday whispered a little louder in my ear this time saying “pick me!”  boy, am I glad I did, because now I’m laughing at myself over how ridiculous it was for me to be as intimidated by something as simple as making a piñata. seriously, who would have thought it would be so easy?
while it isn’t difficult it is rather time consuming.  procrastinators who wait until the day before something is needed need not attempt piñata making, as you need to give yourself a whole week from start to finish, mostly due to the necessary drying time needed between layers.
I show you how, from start to finish, in my latest Fiskars tutorial. you can find all the nitty gritty details here: Cinco de Mayo Pinata by Tania Willis
if you decide to tackle one of your own, be sure to email a picture or leave a link to your blog showing me your finish pinata. i'd love to see it!

she loves him.

yesterday morning:
"he loves me. he loves me not. he loves me. he loves me not. HE LOVES ME!!! yes!" said spidergirl with an enthusiastic fist pump from the backseat, on the ride to school, as she was picking petals from the flowers she found on my vinca vine.

good thing those flowers have 5 petals or she might have melted into a puddle of tears.

she's still quite smitten with her valentine. :)

yesterday evening:
spidergirl talking to doug...."well, what am i supposed to do? i love him." after doug told her maybe she shouldn't send shane any more love notes. then she went on to enthusiastically say (everything is enthusiastic with her)...

"i get in cat fights with geneva because she loves really loves him too, so we get in cat fights."

oh.my.gosh. i couldn't stop laughing. she's 7 people. 7. boy, oh boy, are we in trouble or what!?

Video Tutorial: Featuring Swoon by Little Yellow Bicycle

hello friends! i have a new video tutorial along with a challenge. participating in the challenge will get you the chance to win one of three $25 prize packs. details below!

i'm not sure if i mentioned in the announcement of me being asked to return as a design team member for Little Yellow Bicycle, but i will be staying on as their Training Reel Specialist and bringing you two video tutorials, along with the free downloadable PDF instructions, per month and issuing a challenge with each tutorial! how awesome is that!? i'm really excited to be creating them consistently for our fans!

for this tutorial i focused on using both the clear shapes and the 6x6 decorative edged cardstock pieces from a newly released collection from Little Yellow Bicycle called: Swoon. if you haven't seen it in your local stores yet, go take a peek. isn't this collection gorgeous!? i promise you, the photos don't do it justice at all. just wait until you see it in person. have ya'll seen it at your local stores yet?

i've had lots of people ask about using the clear shapes and what adhesive is best for them. i talk about that a bit in the short video below.

these particular frames are all glittery and just beautiful. so hard to see in a still shot.

i love how this collection is so monochromatic. you can add pops of color or just leave it alone and let the color from the photos stand out. as you notice, i turned all but one photo to black & white. i felt it made a much bigger impact that way.

most of the elements in this layout are glittery or foiled or high-gloss. i'm normally not a fan of the foil, but silver foil on top of grey patterns is absolutely gorgeous. this collection won me over on the foil. :)

anywho.
if you'd like to recreate this layout for yourself, i have a free download of the instructions with a complete supply list: Mr. & Mrs. Layout Instructions

and here's the video supplement with the challenge below!

Tania's CHALLENGE: 6 x 6 Decorative Edge Cardstock
Use any of our 6x6 Decorative Edge Cardstock from ANY of our collections with one of the two ideas presented in the video. You can spin the ideas any way you want.

Load your project to the Little Yellow Bicycle Facebook Wall or email it to lizq@cthruruler.com with '6 x 6 Decorative Edge Cardstock Challenge' in the subject line.

Submit your challenge idea by May 15th. We will choose 3 winners to receive a $25 prize pack and feature your project on the Little Yellow Bicycle blog.

i haven't given up on blogging...

not yet anyway. life has been crazypants the last 10 months. and as a result i haven't made adequate time to blog much of anything other than what my hands have been busy creating.

why? well, because i've decided that i feel so much better when i get 8 hours of sleep a night. imagine that. so, yes, dear friends. i'm choosing sleep over documenting the crazy.

trust me though. every day, as things happen, i'm composing blog posts in my brain. now if i can just get them transcribed from my brain into actual blog posts all would be right in my world.

i thought i'd have plenty of time to get a consistent round of blog updates in while my family was away for spring break, but, you know what happens when i make plans? the universe laughs in my face and throws me some curveballs. that's what. ha.

so, to all of you who check in on me consistently, even though i'm quite inconsistent as of late, i thank you for coming back to visit me.

and next time i go 2 weeks without announcing a winner for a promised giveaway, someone say something! LOL.

thank you to those who took time to offer their input on my post asking what you'd like to see in my upcoming training reels for LYB.

so the winner is.........Cynthia B! so, Cynthia, please email with your mailing information so i can get your goodies out to you.

i've got some exciting stuff to share. soon. stick with me. :)

a friday afternoon adventure...

i was going to stay home and do a million chores around the house on their first day of spring break, but the attitudes were flying and the stress level was escalating after two little girls got freaked out about a bee buzzing around on the neighbor girl's porch. (hello, meltdowns, please go away)

so, i did the only thing i knew to make it all melt away.

i ordered for them to get dressed, changed the battery in my camera, filled some water bottles, grabbed emma's inhalers and headed for our most favorite somewhat-local place: the historical farm.
as you can tell, the attitudes disappeared and they were full of ornery.

you may think that once you've seen a farm, you've seen them all. or you may think seeing it once is enough. but this farm, to us, is something special. every visit there is something new and exciting to discover. like this time, for instance, we found the cutest little babies grazing in the pen. *happy sigh*

and for certain, there were more signs of spring at every turn. i love lilacs. just reminds me of grandma's house.

of course, a big part of the fun of going to the farm for me, is not only getting to tell the girls stories from my childhood of playing at my grandparents farm, but also getting to take bunches of pictures along the way. :)

pictures of these two sisters kissing are always my favorite. i have quite a collection of them now.

it's an 1800's working historical farm, as part of our metro parks, and is free to visitors. while the activities at the farm change from season to season, the one thing that remains constant are the toys that are available throughout the property. the girls love having the chance to master their skills at these games from the past. ashlyn is getting quite proficient at using the stilts. and spidergirl is still mesmerized by the marble maze.

they both really enjoy the tree swing and would stay on it for hours and hours and hours if i let them. someday i'll have one of these two seater old fashioned tree swings. someday. until then, we'll continue to enjoy the one at the farm.

well, hello, there. this is me. totally in my element with a huge smile on my face just sitting outside of the summer kitchen. the farm + sunshine on my face....who wouldn't be smiling?

i LOVE this photo, but i'm so very annoyed with the non-glare/anti-reflective coating on these glasses that shows up green in photos if my head isn't turned just right. ugh.

for those of you just joining us, this is my mini-me...emma grace. otherwise known as spidergirl. and she just lost her two front teeth. remember....ashlyn tied a piece of yarn around the one and slammed the door shut yanking the first one out? well, i'll have to tell you about the second one soon.

anywho. the whole time we were at the farm i just kept thinking.......'how did i get so lucky to be mama to these two girls?' seriously, blessed.

being at the farm is a photographers dream. there are so many different textures and backdrops. i've also been trying to capture photos of multiples &/or piles over the last year. doesn't matter the item, just as long as it's a pile or multiple of something. i have something in mind for all of them.

we took a short walk up to the barnyard to see the ducklings and chickies, but were rather disappointed to not find any. we didn't even attempt to go into the horse barn with the way spidergirl's asthma has been so uncontrolled. horses are one of her triggers.

but we found piles and piles of corn waiting to be ground down for feed.

then we left the farm and headed to the park where i laid under this glorious sunshine for four whole minutes before they were calling me away again to help them reach the tarzan/zipline contraption.

of course, i obliged, because who can resist these big brown puppy dog eyes? not i.

long story short....i wore them out. but truth be told, i wore myself out too. but it was worth it. so very worth it. it's always worth it.

if you're interested to see how the scenery at the farm changes, you can see some of our other adventures here, here, & here. :)

braces and the sensory child

(a sister's touch makes everything better)

so, over a month ago now, ashlyn started the process of getting her appliances put in and bracket cemented on her teeth. i'm not gonna lie, we thought this day would never come since she had so many other hurdles to jump through to get to this point (the wait is only downfall of having ortho done at a teaching hospital).

getting braces can be so very overwhelming even for kids without sensory issues, so it was no surprise that we would run into some challenges with our sensory-sensitive child.

i felt like the day would never come that we'd finally be at this stage, since we started the process of getting to this point almost a full year ago with a few dental appointments to correct some minor dental issues first, then did impressions, then we waited about three months for them to come up with a plan. you can read those back-stories here and here, if you're bored out of your mind.

around the first week of march she got her palatal expander and lower lingual holding arch cemented in place, but they didn't activate the expander that day. they wanted to give her a week to get used to the appliance being in her mouth.

never seen a palatal expander? it's quite an intrusive piece of metal taking up, oh, about 1/2 of the space in the roof of your mouth. well, let us just show you.

looks so barbaric, yes? i'm telling you what.......the first week, the week we referred to as "hell week" was rough. i'm told it's rough for even for kiddos that don't have sensory issues. every single thing she tried to eat, even mashed potatoes, would get stuck. then she'd panic. then she'd cry. then she'd refuse to eat. every single meal, every single day, until we went back the following week. she lost weight, her sensory issues magnified, it was awful.

her nightly pills got stuck. her chemo pills got stuck. it was a hot mess.

the only thing she looked forward to was eating a giant bowl of chocolate icecream every single night. and taking crushed pills instead of whole.

we went back to the ortho one week after it being cemented in and spent the entire hour appointment trying to discuss how to help her not give up, and trying to convince her that it would just take time. so instead of activating the expander after one week, they gave her christmas tree brushes to push out stuck food, they gave her tips on clucking her tongue against the roof of her mouth to release the suction, and they convinced her to keep it in one more week without any activation and think about it for another week.

we left that appointment with only a twinge of hope and still full of stress from dealing with so many meltdowns the week prior.

but........i'm here to tell all you mom's out there going through this (sensory kiddos or not), that if you can just make it to day 10, you'll round the corner and every little thing will be okay.

the second week she added waffles to her icecream only diet and became even more obsessed with eating waffles than she was with eating the chocolate icecream. i'm telling you, my husband and i have made more waffles in the last month than we have our entire marriage.

waffles for breakfast, waffles for dinner, waffles for snack. i'm so sick of smelling waffles, LOL.

so we went back the next week and she was a completely different kid. while the sensory/anxiety stuff didn't completely disappear, i could tell she was finding her own way to deal with this new normal.

week 2 they began cementing brackets on and adding the wires & bands onto her upper teeth and then she was all smiles. she chose purple and green bands to represent, get this......the Incredible Hulk. LOL.

and then, we started turning the key. every morning and every night. i was most nervous about this stage of the game because with each turn of the key her jaw was being forced to expand causing lots of pressure in her cheekbones, sinuses, etc. she was nervous about this part too because of all the conversations with the orthodontist, all she remembered was them telling her it was going to hurt.

but, then.......dr. stephenie made her day and told her she could chew gum! and if you thought she was obsessed with gum chewing before, you should see her now. oh.my.word. never without gum.

AND........i'm SO very thankful to say that we only had a few days of her asking for pain medication and never once did i have to pull teeth to get her to cooperate with this key turning thing. seriously, God is so good to me! because after the last 6 months of stress that i've been through with lots of stuff i haven't yet blogged about, i needed a break.

every time i turned that key with her full compliance i felt like God was giving me a big 'ole hug and whispering in my ear "every little thing is gonna be alright."

and, somewhere in that week she learned she could eat nacho chips with beef and cheese on them. that realization allowed her to brave adding other favorite foods back in. and while they still get stuck, the anxiety over it isn't really there anymore. girlfriend figured it out on her own.

and our whole family breathed a deep sigh of relief that she was pleasant to be around again.

so after just a few days of turning that expander key, you start to see the magic happen. that gap you see in the picture up there--it appeared, like, overnight. mind boggling.

each morning, and each night, we continued turning the key, until 2 weeks later and it looked like this...

we were initially told that they would expand her jaw for 3 months. yes 3 solid months of turning that key every morning and every night. how big was this gap gonna get!? could you imagine?

but, after two weeks they were so impressed with how well her body is responding that they told us just one.more.week.

so the gap is slightly larger than you see in that picture, but after just three weeks of consistently turning the key and only missing ONE morning (go ME for consistency!), we were told she could stop turning the key and now we just hold the expander for 3 months.

and we can graduate from weekly visits to once every 4 weeks. hallelujah! (it's not typical that frequent, but her sensory issues were a game-changer)

BUT, next visit, they will start closing the gap already and keep the expander in so it doesn't collapse. what's happened is they've opened up (basically broken) the upper palette and new bone will fill in the space they've created.

the body is an amazing machine, isn't it?

any other moms out there going through misery with ortho right now? (((HUGE HUGS))) to you...and sending an extra dose of patience your way. :)
